about

I’ve been covering this song since the late 90s after I heard Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s version in the film FINDING FORRESTER. It’s one of those tunes that doesn’t wear out, no matter who does it or how they re-arrange it, and itplays well when I perform it in assisted living homes. The song was written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. The song was crafted specifically for Louis Armstrong, as George was inspired by Louis’s ability to bring people together, regardless of race, class, or nationality. Now considered to be an American icon, Louis Armstrong came from the downside of New Orleans. He rose above poverty and lack to become a game-changer for American culture and a lion of jazz and popular music. He was no stranger to racism and career sabotage, and while this song was a hit internationally in 1967, it under-performed in the USA due to racist obstructionism within the ranks of the American music industry. Thankfully, the music lasts longer than hate.
