about

Following a tumbleweed across the great unknown is an act of faith, so implied in what may have been one of the first “cosmic cowboy” songs. It was composed by Bob Nolan. In the early 1930s, he was working as a caddy in Los Angeles when he got the idea to create a library of free-ranging, uplifting "cowboy songs” and songs of the Old West. This is one of the better-known titles associated with Sons of the Pioneers—the groups that launched Roy Rogers’s career. Originally titled "Tumbling Leaves", the song was reworked into legend with the 1935 Gene Autry film of the same name. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time. It's been covered many times, coming to my attention via Michael Nesmith's cover in the 1970s. I've grown very fond of playing it and, like many of Nolan's songs, there is a hint of transcendence and spirituality.
