San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) (demo)

from STREET MUSIC (REMIXES & SPIN-OFFS) by Johnny J Blair "Singer at Large"

about

This is a 4-track portastudio recording made summer 1991 in a San Francisco loft. My goal was to re-cast this song in a gritty, urban mode ala Iggy Pop. as opposed to the callow "flower power" 1967 original by Scott McKenzie. The city didn't feel like home anymore and I was ready to move on.

I remastered it in 2020 while learning that John Phillips wrote this song to appease people concerned that "dirty hippies" would over-run Monterey for the then-upcoming Monterey Pop Festival. Phillips intended on messaging young people to clean up and behave and it worked. This song has been cited as the biggest enticement for thousands of young people to come to San Francisco duding the 1967 Summer of Love.
