about

“How many musicians does it take to cover a Todd Rundgren song?”

Totally on impulse, I recorded this during WORD2SOUL sessions, just to see if I could do it. The song rose out of the mists of memory and became a necessary inspiration during tough times. My goal was to put a gospel-soul twist on Todd Rundgren’s already soulful lodestone (and it would make it more relevant to the W2S project). I played the demo for a few friends (all Todd fans of varying stripes), just to get input. I intended to add more high vocals and remix it, but the demo got set aside in the process of working on originals for W2S.

Revisiting it years later, it sounds like I was having a good time in the midst of tough times.

Jeff Maziarek runs a Rundgren-blog. Jeff wrote about Rundgren’s live performances of “Just One Victory”: “It’s really uplifting…as it reminds me that I, too, can have access to that type of joy if I follow my heart. One great example of this joy emanating from Todd can be found at the very end of the encore of “Just One Victory” on the Liars Live DVD (2005) – the camera catches him turning back to look at Jesse (or perhaps Prairie) for just a split second and the smile on his face in that moment is truly infectious – like the proverbial kid in a candy store. It’s really heartwarming to see…you don’t have to be a rock star on a stage to experience the same thing. You just find something you love to do and do it as often as you can, just for the sheer joy of it.”
