At the time this song came about, I was in social proximity to a group of attractive, healthy, and intelligent people. This group had all the advantages in life, yet they were very vocal about how little they cared about people and their problems. That made me sad, listening to people who were deliberately turning their backs on those who didn't have the advantages. These lyrics were a reaction to a constant hearing of “I don’t care" about other people, but forgetting the flip side, that “…some day you’re gonna wish someone cared about you…”

Some of the lines were taken from the New Testament (I got a lexicon and looked up the word "care" and went from there). The music bed was co-written with Jeff Lloyd.

This is a remake. The earlier 1983 version (on an EP called CARE PACKAGE) was in a synth-new wave style, with some old school soul. For DOOR IN THE WATER I took it in an electronic-funk direction. The sounds from Michael Jackson's DX7 keyboard really come through here.
