about

This was the opening song of my first full-length album, DOOR IN THE WATER (1985). The "open door" and "water" themes flowed through what was later called "a New Wave concept album."

Musically and lyrically, it was reflective of my life in San Francisco (going to church, the importance of fellowship) and of the personal work I was doing, forgiving people, pursuing virtue, and more. It was a good time in my life, even though I had no clue about what "recovery work" or "step work" was.

This was recorded in Knoxville TN using Yamaha DX7 keyboards used by The Jacksons during their VICTORY tour. The music quotes parts of The Beach Boys' "Wild Honey," "Carpet Crawlers" by Genesis, and John Lennon's "Watchin' the Wheels." The water motif was inspired by "Close to the Edge" by Yes.

When I reissued the DOOR IN THE WATER album in 2010, I used an edit version of this track. Now, in 2017, this EP presents the original long version, making it's digital download & streaming debut.
