about

I wrote this song in 2003. The lyrics are based on the Bible verse "The rain falls on the just and the unjust." That's something addicts and people in recovery need to remember. Musically, I was influenced by Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, and Michael Roe (The 77s).

This is the original acoustic recording, produced by Mark Doyon and released 2005 on the TRADEMARKS album. In 2010, Sam Bowen did it justice in his full-band version, complete with strings. Sam's version is available on this bandcamp site and (in various formats) online.

In 2015, I saw thisl double rainbow near Mt. Shasta CA and was able to catch it on my camera.

lyrics

THE SKY CRIES

Blood is pounding through your head
Nothing makes any sense
You have a dark spot, a feeling of dread
Tired of sitting on the fence
Makes you feel like you're the only one
Who ever felt this pain
Makes it hard to see the sun
When all you see is rain

Chorus:
The sky cries, the rain falls down on everyone (2x)
But it never, never lies, and it doesn't last forever

Wish that I could say the proper words
And be a comfort too
Someone told me to stay right here
And pray it through with you
Just let it go, just let it fall
All these things will fly
I'll be listening for the call
When the sky it starts to cry

Repeat Chorus

The rain falls on the just and the unjust
The rain falls on the captive and the free
The rain falls down on the black and white
The rain falls down on you and me
...and the sky it cries, it cries, it cries
...and the sky it cries, but it doesn't last forever.
