about

One of my most requested, re-recorded and recycled titles, "She's Not Some Animal" is from my "San Francisco canon." The lyrics combine street-wise romanticisms (probably from when I was working as a bicycle messenger) with musical references from Badfinger, The Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, and The Kinks. The definitive version was remixed and issued on GRATEFUL in 2007.

The lyrics came from experiences shared around the late 70s punk-new wave music scene, when young people were reaching back into the Sixties for musical ideas but reaching forward in a strange cocktail of anger, fashion, and optimism. It had to do with people I was meeting and music in vogue then, specifically Elvis Costello and The Kinks. The Badfinger-Beach Boys influences came on later when I was able to overdub vocals. I did all the parts except for the Linn drums and timbales by Erik Nielsen (Elvin Bishop, Pointer Sisters).

The track went through multiple mixes before I was satisfied with the sound (excepting the speedy demo version made in Florida with drummer Mark Jones, which may be lost in time). This mix was finalized in 1993 by Rusty Richards, a Grammy-winning engineer who worked with the likes of Brian Wilson and Buddy & Julie Miller. I still wish I’d mixed the vocals louder, but it has stood the test of time as a solid mix and song. Thanks to everyone who keeps requesting it.
