about

In 1965, when “The Monkees” were still on the drawing board as a “band”/television show, young David Jones (fresh from Broadway and a deal with Colpix Records) gave an interview on a Los Angeles radio show. He was discussing current fads and future music trends with the radio host, and David predicted there would be a form of “Broadway rock,” and Spoken Word recordings would find a position in the marketplace of music. The host argued “not,” but within a few years rock musicals were common, and artists such as Donovan and Velvet Underground were doing Spoken Word.

“Exotic Animals…” follows in this slipstream. Davy laid zany narration over this bed of a progressive rockers jamming with the Felix String Quartet from Moscow (Russia). The inspiration for the music bed came from “Theme One” by Van Der Graaf Generator. The music bed (started in Stockholm, Sweden) was partially created by my old friend, drummer-percussionist-techno whiz Bil Bryant. It recalls "spy movie soundtracks," but with a twist of espionage in Amish country, which David (referencing Pennsylvania) used to call “God’s Country.”

The samples of David’s voice sum up his perennial catch phrases and bromides about horses and “dollars and sense.” I mixed them in the way you hear people talking in the rumble of airports and restaurants. David’s voice gave him away when his face didn’t.

The final mash was mixed by Tim Breon and released in 2001 on the limited-edition EXOTIC ANIMALS & BEACHES OF PENNSYLVANIA EP. A remix was included on the GRATEFUL CD in 2007.
